Es’hail-2 NB and WB IOT testing continues

Es’hail-2 NB and WB IOT testing continues

January 17, 2019 Off By Peter Gülzow

January 17, 2019 A lot of stations in the footprint of Es’hail-2 (P4-A) have noticed that the Narrow Band (NB) transponder and the Wide Band (WB) transponder has been activated again, clearly visible on the transponder noise.

We would like to remind again:
NO UPLINK OF SIGNALS PERMITTED !!

This is still part of the official testing by MELCO engineers before the transponder will be officially handed over to Es’hailSat and QARS !

MELCO is performing some passive tests for noise pedestal measurements and profiling of the transponder characteristics, similar to the ones performed in late December at the 24°E position. Meanwhile Es’hail-2 reached its final position at 25.9°E.

AMSAT P4-A ground station on the way to Qatar

Since January 16th, 5 pallets with a total weight of around 705 kg are on their way to Qatar.

This is the ground segment for the NB and WB transponder on P4-A / Es’hail-2, which is being built by the AMSAT-DL team and installed in the Satellite Control Center (SCC) or Teleport of Es’hailSat. In addition to LEILA, this also includes reception and transmission equipment for DATV (DVB-S2) and SSB. Furthermore, an amateur radio station will be installed in the new office building of Es’hailSat, which will be maintained by radio amateurs employed there and by QARS.

Almost identical equipment will be made available to QARS for its headquarters in Doha. This also includes a 2.4 meter offset dish. SSB and DATV operation is then also possible, e.g. as backup and for emergency amateur radio operation. Negotiations are also currently underway with the Institute for Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Qatar about technical cooperation and to get the students interested in amateur radio communication.

The next planned steps:

  • Departure of the AMSAT-DL P4-A Team to Doha / Qatar.
  • Installation and commissioning of the P4-A ground station in the SCC of Es’hailSat.
  • Testing DATV-Link with the AMSAT-DL ground station at the Bochum observatory.
  • Installation and commissioning of the P4-A backup station at QARS.
  • Official ceremony and inauguration of the transponder by the President of QARS.
  • The transponder is then released for general operation!

Important note:

No uplink to the satellite until the official announcements!

Thanks for your understanding and co-operation.
